How it works

Over the day we’ll explore:

Session One – Brave Beginnings
We’ll unpack all those “what if…” worries, discover why our brains are wired to notice uncertainty and create our own personalised Confidence Toolkit ready for September.

Session Two – Finding Your People
Through games, creative challenges and practical role play, children will explore how friendships begin, how they change over time and how to stay true to themselves while meeting lots of new people.

Session Three – Ready to Shine
Children will bring everything together through mindful crafting, confidence-building activities and practical Little Tweaks they’ll be able to use during their first weeks of secondary school, leaving with a keepsake that reminds them just how capable they already are.

Key areas covered

Throughout the three sessions, children will learn how to:

  • Make new friends and start conversations with confidence.
  • Understand that friendships naturally change and grow, and that’s a normal part of life.
  • Manage worries and calm busy minds using simple breathing and mindfulness techniques.
  • Build resilience when things don’t go to plan.
  • Feel organised, capable and ready for the exciting challenges that Year 7 brings.

Each morning includes hands-on creative projects to take home, helping children remember the practical wellbeing strategies they’ve learnt long after the summer holidays have finished.

Description

Ready, Set, Year 7 in partnership with Little Tweaks. Three fun, confidence-building sessions to help your child step into secondary school feeling calm, capable and excited.

Starting secondary school is one of the biggest milestones in a child’s life. New classrooms. New teachers. New routines. New friendships. It is completely normal for children to feel excited one minute and nervous the next. The Transition to Year 7 workshop is a joyful, practical and creative day, designed to help children approach September with confidence, curiosity and a toolkit of calming strategies that they can use from their very first day. They may even get to meet some new friends who are starting at the same school in September.

Through games, creative activities, mindful crafts, storytelling, movement and simple Little Tweaks, children will discover that confidence isn’t something you’re born with. It’s something you can practise. They’ll leave not only feeling more prepared for secondary school, but excited for the adventure ahead.

The workshops are led by Laura Reilly, Assistant Headteacher, Psychology Graduate, Certified Mindfulness Teacher and founder of Little Tweaks. With over 15 years of experience supporting children and families, Laura combines the latest research with creativity, warmth and practical strategies that children genuinely enjoy.

As seen at Fearne Cotton’s Happy Place and the Joe Wicks Wellbeing Festival.

The science

Research consistently shows that children who are emotionally prepared for the move from primary to secondary school experience smoother social adjustment, stronger wellbeing and are more likely to maintain positive engagement with learning. Supporting confidence, friendships and coping skills before September can reduce transition worries and help children settle more successfully. Research from the Education Endowment Foundation and Dr Charlotte Bagnall’s School Transition and Adjustment Research (STARS) highlights that structured transition support improves emotional wellbeing and school adjustment.

Whether your child is already counting down the days or quietly carrying a few worries, these three fun and inspiring mornings will help them walk into Year 7 feeling ready to embrace everything that lies ahead.
