How it works

Children should be registered through the website by booking and paying for the workshop.

Children will receive their booklets at the start of the week. These booklets are filled with exercises and tasks to complete as a group and individually throughout the course of the week.

The marking and feedback within the booklets is extensive and will give you a good indication of the areas in which your child excelled and where they may need improvement. You will also have the chance to talk to the teacher at pick-up, provided you arrive on time.

Key areas covered

We cover these key areas:

7+ and 8+: Tasks range from making and building activities. Working together in a group and taking turns. Completing word puzzles, block puzzles, reading out loud and answering mental maths questions. Spelling words and writing tasks. Listening skills and co-operation. For example children are taught to play a card game and then asked to explain the game to a partner.

11+: Tasks range from looking at pictures, discussing complex questions, working out Maths and science problems and completing activities. Group discussions help children to gain confidence in their own thoughts and opinions on a variety of topics. They also give the children many ideas to use for the real interviews, promoting confidence.

Description

Passing the entrance exams is often just the first step. Schools also want to get to know the individual behind the test scores. It is likely that your child will be interviewed by their prospective schools and may be invited to attend an activity day, often in a small group. Interview Skills is not about teaching children exactly what to say. This defeats the purpose of an interview and will be noticed by experienced interviewers. Instead, our sessions will help your child to think on their feet and offer natural responses to a range of typical interview questions, showing a reflection of who they are and what they are passionate about. They will develop confidence when meeting new people in unfamiliar situations, work comfortably in a group and share their ideas eloquently while respectfully listening to others.

Each session is interactive and children are given a booklet of activities and tasks to complete in a group or individual interview situation. These booklets are sent home at the end of the week, filled with comments and feedback from our experienced teachers. We focus on good manners, how to shake hands, posture, how to sit and maintain eye contact with an adult. Question types range from basic enquiries to find out a child’s interests to more philosophical questions. Groups will also look at art, various conundrums, mental maths problems and speaking and listening activities. When not asking direct questions, teachers are also looking at a variety of skills in the individual such as leadership skills, listening skills, collaboration, team work, general knowledge and behaviour. We help guide the children to think of ways to subtly show these off without being too bossy or passive. This is a positive, collaborative experience where children also learn from each other and gain top tips to help them in the real thing.
