How it works

Select the date of the workshop and your child’s current year group. Children are registered through the website by booking and paying for the workshop.

Children will be placed in classes by year groups/entry level. For suitability please refer to the ‘suitable for’ section above.

You will receive an email a few days before the booked date with details about the workshop.

The children will work through their own booklet within a small group with a teacher guiding them through the tasks. The main aim is to talk through the comprehension soon after it has been completed, something not always possible at school due to timetable constraints. Our experienced teachers point out where marks have been gained or missed and this immediate focus, in small groups, helps students build on their understanding of what will be required of them when answering questions during the exams.

Booklets are marked over the course of the week and children will then take these home on the final day. The marking and feedback within the booklets is extensive and will give you a good indication of the areas in which your child excelled and where they may need improvement. You will also have the chance to talk to the teacher on the last day at pick-up, provided you arrive on time.

Description

The English Exam Preparation Workshop is aimed at fine-tuning children’s comprehension, composition and grammar skills ahead of 7+, 8+, 10+ and 11+ independent school exams. Our booklets are designed around a varied range of English exams that children will come across in independent school exams, including the London Consortium and the ISEB pre test for 11+ and 13+. While the booklets are completed by hand, the skills that are practised are directly transferable to an online setting, such as solving multiple choice questions, scanning a text for key information and finding evidence in the passage.

Our English Exam Preparation Workshop is designed to polish up on English skills in multiple choice comprehensions, written comprehensions, grammar and vocabulary plus creative writing and verbal reasoning. As with all our workshop booklets, the content for this workshop is carefully written and varies for each workshop upon the principle that there is something for everyone. Dictation and spelling are included in the 7+ and 8+ booklets.

We are conscious that the children are at different levels at different stages of the year and our booklets are designed accordingly. The content is always diverse and interesting. As with Creative Writing, discussion is key throughout these workshops. Children are encouraged to interact at all times, gaining confidence, so they understand and enjoy the tasks they are given.
