Suitable for

Children in Years 1-6

(Year 1 students can join from February of Year 1 onwards)

Suitable for writers of all abilities. These workshops are not only for exam preparation.

How it works

Select the date of the workshop and your child’s current year group. Children are registered through the website by booking and paying for the workshop.

You will receive an email a few days before the booked date with details about the workshop.

Children will receive their booklets at the start of the week. These booklets are filled with exercises and writing tasks to complete as a group and individually throughout the course of the week.

Booklets are marked over the course of the week and children will then take these home on the final day. The marking and feedback within the booklets is extensive and will give you a good indication of the areas in which your child excelled and where they may need improvement. You will also have the chance to talk to the teacher at pick-up, provided you arrive on time.

Description

Writing is similar to the opening of a chess game: the pieces must be put in place at the start. The key to successful stories and descriptions lies in structure and planning. Both of these are at the heart of what we do in Creative Writing. Equally popular with boys and girls, each workshop is different and offers new and exciting themes. We are always thrilled to see children returning again and again, making excellent progress at these hugely popular, fun and educational workshops.

By producing a piece of writing each day and getting live feedback whilst still fresh, the children can immediately celebrate their successes and focus on how to improve their work. Writing pieces will include: story writing, descriptive writing, persuasive writing and diary writing. The groups are small and age-appropriate allowing children to build an understanding of how to write stories based on our ‘Six Secrets for Success’. The children will learn how to structure each piece of writing along with learning what linguistic features to include in their writing to bring these pieces to life, such as powerful imagery, similes, metaphors and many others.  We focus on what is required by schools at the various age levels, but we also want to engender a sense of daily achievement and enjoyment. We know the talent is there for all children; we just help to open the box.
