These workshops have been carefully designed to prepare students sitting independent school exams in the coming season in 7+, 8+ and 11+. They are graded in difficulty throughout the year with the hardest courses just before the exams. The comprehensions are based on current independent school entrance exams and are set at a high academic level. We would advise parents of children not taking exams to use the English Skills Booster workshops instead.

How it works

The workshops consist of a range of different comprehensions to give children the experience of the variety of ways in which they may be tested in forthcoming exams. Each booklet contains: fiction/classic comprehensions, non-fiction, poetry, multiple choice and picture comprehensions. The comprehensions are different in each workshop and important areas of grammar and punctuation are also covered.

The papers are all written by our experienced Yellowbird Team and are designed to test key questions that include: straight-forward facts; inference questions; reference to the text questions; point, evidence and explanation questions; effect/mood questions and word search/synonym questions.

Composition tasks can include continuing the story, recounts, diary entries and letter writing depending on the requirements of the comprehensions.

We also focus on the importance of timing. Exam techniques for this are key. As with all our workshops, children will be encouraged to discuss the tasks. They may be asked to complete papers under timed conditions. They will always have an opportunity to talk through the questions, so that they understand how to improve their work.

At all times, the Yellowbird teachers will guide children on how best to answer similar exam questions and, by doing so, obtain maximum marks. After all, 1 mark out of 2 is 50% any way you look at it.
